WJCC School Redistricting: What Williamsburg & James City County Families Need to Know

Families in Williamsburg and James City County, Virginia are paying close attention to an important school redistricting process that could change school attendance zones beginning with the 2027–2028 school year.

Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools (WJCC) is working with MGT to develop revised attendance zones with the goal of making better use of school facilities and resources across the division. One factor driving the process is the planned opening of two dedicated Bright Beginnings pre-K centers in fall 2027, which will free classroom space in several elementary schools while other schools continue to experience capacity challenges.

The proposed redistricting process considers several factors, including school capacity and enrollment growth, neighborhood schools, transportation and bus times, demographics, minimizing disruption, and maintaining feeder patterns from elementary to middle and high school.

What Does This Mean for Local Homeowners & Buyers?

School attendance boundaries can be an important consideration when purchasing a home in Williamsburg, Toano, James City County, and surrounding communities. While the proposed maps are not yet final, families considering a move should be aware that school assignments could change before the 2027–2028 school year.

WJCC has now released August map revisions, allowing residents to compare the current attendance zones with the proposed revisions for elementary, middle, and high schools.

Please note: Attendance zones are still part of the review process and are subject to change.

The current timeline calls for the steering committee to make its recommendation in September, the superintendent to present a recommendation to the School Board in September, and the School Board to act on the proposed attendance zones in October 2026. If approved, the new attendance zones are scheduled to take effect in August 2027. The community can still submit a survey response on the August draft of the maps until August 16, 2026.
